Washing or Cleaning of Hosiery Garments:

Here we do not intend to explain ‘Laundry’ in total but limit ourselves to hosiery products, ‘Banians and Underwears (Vests and Briefs)’ in particular. Following are our practical observations without going into technical details or theory behind it. Interested ones can find more than enough material on Internet to be an expert in “Laundry”. ‘Banians and Underwears (Vests and Briefs)’ are hosiery products. Their main function is to absorb body secretions and keep body and the outer cloths clean. Outer cloths are very costly and contribute predominantly in the personality of the person. That is why mostly ‘Banians and Underwears (Vests and Briefs)’ are made up of cotton. It is very important to understand that special low twist yarn is used for hosiery i.e. knitted products. This makes ‘Banians and Underwears (Vests and Briefs)’ highly absorbent. This low twist yarn is very tender yarn. Any harsh treatment or rough use/handling of hosiery garment leads to deterioration of the knitted cloth made from low twist yarn. Hence washing of hosiery garments should be done very delicately and with utmost care. Slight negligence/carelessness in washing/cleaning of hosiery garments will damage the knitted cloth and reduce the life of the hosiery garment. Life expectancy of a pair of 100% cotton hosiery garments is about six to eight months. It may very widely depending on the nature of the work of the person, care taken while washing, chemicals used for cleaning the used garments, etc. Following points should be given due attention while washing hosiery garments. Never forget to read manufacturer’s washing instructions.

There are two situations, which are considered here for cleaning of hosiery garments i.e. ‘Banians and Underwears (Vests and Briefs)’
a. Two pairs of ‘Banians and Underwears (Vests and Briefs)’ are used for daily usage, one pair for every alternate day. In this case garments need to be washed everyday. In this case quantum of the laundry is very small. Generally all the cloths are washed together as sorting and washing separately may not be practical.
b. Eight to ten pairs are used, one pair each day throughout the week. In this case laundry is a weekend job. Cloths are accumulated through week. The quantum becomes large. Sorting of garments becomes essential and can be done before actual washing. One can also sort the cloths as and when they are used so that sorted cloths are ready to wash on weekend. This will save time of sorting, which one can use for some other weekend program with family.
Following precautions are applicable for both situations.

1. Avoid using acids or alkalis in washing:
Acids and alkalis reduce the life of the cotton hosiery. White hosiery garments appear yellowish after use for some time. It is a clear indication of the fact that the garment is made up of 100% cotton (or at least very high content of cotton), which is absorbing body secretions, effectively. When ‘Banians and Underwears (Vests and Briefs)’ start appearing yellowish, it is not wise to bleach them to make them white. Bleaching damages the garment and reduces the life drastically. Oxidation bleaching can be considered for whitening but one needs to evaluate cost aspect. Instead, treating white hosiery garments by some good optical whitening agent after washing may increase the whiteness of the garments to some extent.

2. Do not use brush or rub on the stone:
As already explained above hosiery products are very delicate. They should be handled with utmost care. As such it is not advisable to use a brush for cleaning most soiled parts. Dip the garment in water, apply soap/detergent and rub it by hand. Soak them for about an hour. This will give better results after cleaning. Some special stain removing efforts are required which needs to be addressed on case-to-case basis. Use of washing machine takes care of this critical precaution.

3. Quality of water i.e. whether it is hard or soft is very important. Soft water gives better result with economy. If the water is hard then soap quantity required is more. One can soften hard water to a great extent by putting small quantity of soda in the water. Keep it overnight. Use the top 3/4th water. This is much softer water than the original one. If the water is hard, using detergent is a better option. Warm water gives much better results.

4. Do not twist hosiery garments to remove water after washing. In washing machines, spinning is the last integral part of the washing cycle. This removes almost all water from the garments. If the cloths are washed by hands then do press the garments by hands to remove as much water as possible. Never twist them, as they will loose elasticity resulting in distortion of the garments. They look very odd when distorted.

5. Make sure your washing aids are clean. This is particularly applicable to washing machines. Make sure you read the Instruction Booklet very carefully. Understand the functions/working of washing machine. Make a calendar / timetable of the cleaning of the washing machine. Maintenance of any machine is generally multilevel.
a. One is daily routine, which is done everyday. This includes checking of the spinning drum. See if any cloth is left behind. Is there something in the drum, which has come out of pocket from one of the cloths? Though we check pockets while sorting cloths, it is good practice to countercheck at this point. This does not take long and can be done easily. Even if you get a loose button in the drum, you know that one of the cloths needs your attention. ‘A stitch in time saves nine’. It may save you from probable embarrassment at an important meeting/date.
b. Weekly checking may include cleaning of filters/nets of the washing machines. Cleaning them increases the quality of washing by allowing complete flushing of water after cleaning. Checking of filters/nets will allow you to change them in time. Damaged one may allow dust and other particle in the pipeline chocking them. This will prevent dirty water from flushing completely and reuse it in the washing cycle further. This way one will not get clean cloths.
c. Depending on your use of the machine make sure that once in three/six months servicing is done by company’s authorized person. This may include inspection of rubber parts, any abnormal play in moving parts like drum, inspection of drum itself, vibrations of the machine during spinning of drum, etc. This will prevent any calamity in future.

Above precautions will increase the life of garments, ‘Banians and Underwears (Vests and Briefs)’ in particular giving you the best value for your money.

Happy Washing!
